Thailand’s 2008 Best Picture submission to the Academy Awards, and winner of more than 20 major international awards, Love of Siam is a powerful tale of young love, the enduring strength of familial ties and the desperate belief that love can cure all.
Tong and Mew are best friends living quiet family lives in Bangkok, until their young idyll is shattered by the disappearance of Tong’s older sister. The shattered family moves away, separating the two boys. Mew grieves at the piano, writing songs and dreaming of his friend. He’s now on the brink of stardom – the lead singer in a popular boy band.
A chance meeting throws the two young men together again, where they meet the band’s new manager, June, a young woman who bears a striking resmemblance to Tong’s lost sister. Willing to go to any lengths to soothe the continued anguish of Tong’s once loving parents, the two boys persuade June to visit the father.
What might seem ripe for an after-school special is lent heartfelt poignancy by the devastated parents and the star turns of the two leads as they reignite their love. With no easy answers for either the adults or Tong and Mew, Love of Siam draws the viewer in, urging us to root for this family to find their way back to love.
If there’s one film to see this year, make it this one.
